Looking for eco friendly fashion with a message, plus size edition.

So for a long time I spent a lot of money on ‘fast fashion*’. I was buying new clothes pretty much all the time as I bought everything I owned in Primark, or, New Look if I was feeling fancy. I mean, I was young, I worked in a pub and I went out fairly often to have some drinks and dance the night away with my friends so money wasn’t exactly flowing but still. I’ve always just really liked clothes as a way to express myself, or something to hide myself in depending on what was going on in my life.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve become more interested in sustainability (we only have the one planet after all) and trying to make a conscious effort to research the places I get my clothes from to see if it’s ethically sourced and sustainable. This isn’t always possible and it is a new way of thinking and acting for me so obviously not everything I buy is going to fit into these categories, but I am trying.

Add into this mix that I am much bigger than I was when I was younger, it’s not possible to buy clothes from any shop/website that I see. A lot of plus size fashion doesn’t focus on style and comfort, let alone sustainability. Things are getting better and I’ve come across a lot more ‘fat friendly’ websites, shops, influencers etc in the last year than I have for years.

One of my biggest passions is promoting equality and supporting those that need it, especially in what has been some of the darkest times for a lot of people. I’m happy to talk about a movement or cause I believe in, stand up for people that can’t stand up for themselves, people that aren’t being heard, but getting to support it or bring attention to it via my clothes? It’s a yes from me.

One thing I have come across is a company called Creative House UK, a Manchester based business launched by Sare Goldman in 2019. All the clothing items are accredited by WRAP, Amfori and OEKO-TEX**. Only ethically produced yarn is used to make the products, and the clothing items are made in manufacturing facilities that are powered by renewable energy.

I came across the page on Instagram due to one of the plus size influencers that I follow sharing one of their images (I can’t remember who sorry). The post said All Body Sizes Deserve Nice Clothes, which of course I 100% agree with. I ended up browsing their Instagram page and then the website. There were quite a few items that caught my eye, tees with slogans promoting body positivity, feminism, LGBTQ+ acceptance and racial equality.

The website states: Our independent business has been built on a love of home interior, clothing and spreading the message of Self Love and acceptance. Our products are made by hand with lots of love and care. We love to empower other people and all our products reflect that.

Since I discovered them I have found that I am frequently commenting on or sharing their posts as I love a lot of the statements and pieces they are putting out there. Sare is a self proclaimed body positive tattoo lover (much like me!) and I am really happy to share her message and potentially introduce people to a fab new business.

Annoyingly for me (with my wallet empty and wardrobe full), I could’ve happily bought the majority of the website, but I put a few things aside for payday and then ended up adding another tee to my basket before finally placing my order. The final item I added boldly states: Respect Existence or Expect Resistance. It was shared on Instagram with a message confirming that 50% of the proceeds will go to UK Black Pride. I was sold.

UK Black Pride is Europe’s largest celebration for LGBTQ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern and Latin American descent. Fore more info on UK Black Pride please visit: https://www.ukblackpride.org.uk/mission-statements

I have only recently started on my journey of self acceptance and body positivity but once I got my order through I was excited to try it all on and take some pics to share on my social media, I have scattered them through this post and hopefully my goofy self and obvious awkwardness hasn’t put you off enjoying them!

All the tees I bought were super comfortable and I’ve happily worn them several times already, showing them off to my family and friends and sharing pics online. I sized up as I prefer a slightly baggier fit but if I’ve seen a lot of people buying the correct fit and they just look like perfectly fitted tops.

I know I’ve only really talked about tees, simply because they are my jam at the moment but there are also sweatshirts, beanies, tote bags, prints, babygrows and phone accessories available.
